How to prepare your home for a renovation

Sheffield home renovations.

If you’re gearing up for a renovation and want to make sure that you are preparing your home as the ideal blank canvas, there are certainly some steps that you can take to help make it as seamless as possible and, of course, as stress-free as possible both for you and your contractor.

Tips for preparing your home for a renovation

Here are some of the top tips to help you properly prepare your home for a renovation.  Since TV shows don’t often show you this part of the process, many people are surprised by how much work has to go into this part!

  • Do not procrastinate (seriously): Most people think “oh, it’s just a bit of stuff, I’ll do it next week” and then realize that everything takes a very long time to do. Even if you think it’s too early, start anyway and take your time.  Odds are that you’ll find you underestimated the amount of time and you’ll be working hard to get it done on time.  You don’t want to rush this process, as it leads to extra stress and potentially forgotten items or broken items.
  • Remove everything from the space that you are renovating: Remove anything and everything that you possibly can from the space that you’re addressing. Box everything up and put it into another place in the house (such as a bedroom or a basement).  Your contactor may tell you that you can leave a few things, but unless you can’t physically remove something (such as a heavy appliance), you should remove it just in case! There are many self storage locations in and around Sheffield that offer a safe place for your belongings from as little as just £10 per week.
  • Create an inventory of your home’s belongings: Make an inventory of anything and everything that you are packing so that you know exactly what you have and where it is. This prevents anything getting lost or mixed up with the other boxes in your home.  It’s also a great excuse to start weeding through things that you really don’t need or want anymore, if you wish!
  • Pack anything you’re worried about: Even if it’s not necessarily in the room being renovated, don’t hesitate to pack up anything fragile or valuable. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to those precious items that you have, and it’ll be a huge weight off your mind, too.

It can be overwhelming to leave your home while you wait for it to be renovated, but it’ll be right there waiting for you when the project is done!  It’ll certainly be worth it when you see that the preparation that you do is going to make the renovation process simpler and also help ease the stress on you, too.

Proper preparation is going to make the difference for your renovation timeline, the key is to make sure that you give yourself enough time and that you focus on the right elements.  If you’re ever unsure, always reach out to us. We will be very happy to help answer your questions or concerns!
